A lot of Mac users are unable to load the game on Mac, but it works just fine on WIndows. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but the developer hasn't addressed the issue or attempted to fix it in the two or so years the game has been on the Steam store. The way i fixed this (on yosemite) was i opened finder, pressed command+shift+G, typed in '/' (no quotations) into the search that comes up then press enter. This will take you to the root of the hard drive. Copy the data folder from cave story+ (OP describes how to get there) then paste it into the root of your hard drive.
