For most USB-equipped devices, a simple USB adapter will provide a direct means of transferring data. However, the Galaxy Tab series makes things slightly more complicated by requiring two separate types of connections depending on your means of transfer. The 30-pin USB data cable included with the tablet will suffice to transfer data to and from a PC or Mac, but for connecting external USB devices, you'll need the optional USB adapter kit.

Computer USB Transfer

If the software that you need to transfer is located on a USB drive connected to your computer, the included cable will do the trick. Simply connect the 30-pin end to your Galaxy Tab, and the standard USB end to an available USB port on your computer. Mac users may have to install an Android-specific file transfer utility, but PC users will be able to see the Galaxy as a connected device within Windows Explorer. Either way, moving the data then becomes a simple matter of drag-and-drop, or copy-and-paste. Should you want to view and move remote data from your Galaxy Tab, you may find it easier to install a file manager app such as Android File Manager, Xplore or Total Commander.

Direct USB Transfer

To connect a USB drive directly to your Galaxy Tab, you'll need the separate USB adapter kit, which may be purchased at a number of online or local retailers. This provides full USB connectivity to all Galaxy Tab models except the original Galaxy Tab 7' (which has a built-in USB port anyway). If the USB drive that you wish to connect is a flash drive, all you need to do is insert it into the adapter. For an external hard drive, or any other device requiring a separate USB cable, ensure that you have the correct USB plug for both ends -- the Samsung adapter supports standard-size USB 2.0 plugs, but some devices may require a mini or micro plug on the other end.

Alternate Transfer Methods

If a USB connection is impossible or undesired, there are still a few ways to transfer data to your Galaxy Tab. Should the USB drive be connected to a wireless network (a NAS server or other shared drive), you may be able to access it using a protocol such as DLNA or Bluetooth. If the USB drive is on a network with an SD card reader, you can transfer the data to a card and insert the card into the Galaxy Tab's microSD card slot. If you've made the drive's contents accessible through the Internet, you could download the data to your tablet via FTP or a cloud-based app such as Dropbox. If the drive is attached to a computer and your Galaxy Tab has email capabilities, you could simply attach the data to a message and email it using an account that you can check on your tablet.

Files vs Apps

Media-oriented sharing options such as DLNA will work best with music, video or picture files, but you may not be able to use these methods to transfer other types of data, including executable applications. Likewise, the Galaxy Tab may balk at recognizing or transferring unrecognized file formats. Android devices such as the Tab will only recognize application software that is bundled in the APK format. However, the Tab will allow you to install software from an APK file on a connected drive, sometimes without even having to transfer the data first. If you are having difficulties installing from APK files, try an app installer app from the app market (Google Play or otherwise).
